The more the merrier in one of Manhattan's favorite fine Mexican restaurants. One of two locations (the other is in Midtown) run by an indeterminate number of immigrant brothers and their influential mother, Mama Mexico really knows how to pack in food, family and fiesta into a single fun-filled visit. Don't be overwhelmed by the atmosphere, which pierces you like a pinata the moment you step into the decorative, colorful dining room. A margarita- and sangria-stocked bar and fresh bowl of guacamole made tableside may help newcomers navigate through the vast menu, which includes everything from fileta con setas (marinated filet mignon) to pork chop fajitas to combination plates of chimichangas or calamari, shrimp and red snapper. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends, people are camped outside the cantina cramming to sneak a peek at the mariachi band and tequila-wielding owner roving around tables inside.

soooo much fun!!

best atmosphere before going out or for a date. the mariachi band and overwhelming felicity that fills the place sets just the right mood. the guac is to die for as is the long list of margaritas. the rest of the food is good but not great but definitely worth it for how much fun this place is. sometimes late at night the manager comes around with a tequila bottle and pours shots down patrons mouths. Also order a sangrita shot (type of tequila and tomato mixture) really great.

Instead of going to this very overpriced restaurant that is charging TOO much for nada, why not venture to some of the teeny tiny true Mexican restaurants on 116th street on the east side, there are many reasonably priced small places. SO they dont; pour drinks down your throat but you are getting alot more food for the price and supporting very small businesses that some hard working people have started! Mame Mexico is for Gringos !

By artsdad720 on 02/12/2006
THE FOOD WAS GOOD. A BIT OVERPRICED, BUT GOOD. THEY ARE WAY OVER CROWDED. GOD FORBID IF THERE IS A FIRE. PEOPLE WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING OUT. IN FACT I HAVE CONTACTED THE FIRE DEPT TO INSPECT THEM DURING THE WEEKEND DINNER HOUR.
