You know you're close when everyone on the street suddenly has a white cardboard box in hand or a large chocolate cupcake on its way to their mouths. All of the legends of Magnolia are true. This is the original bakery that made homespun cupcakes, piled high with pastel-colored buttercream icing, cool enough to be featured on 'Sex and the City' and create lines around the corner at midnight on a Saturday. The popularity has created a sort of Soup Nazi atmosphere once inside; it's strictly counter service and best if you know, before you shuffle nearer to the glass display to place your order, whether its going to be banana pudding or a slice of red velvet cake tonight. Hopefully Magnolia will remain the beloved West Village living legend that it is, even as it is slowly surrounded by such high-priced neighbors as Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren.
