Runways are usually reserved for beauties, jet-setters and stylish showoffs. So it's not surprising that the long white refrigerated display case at this Upper East Side shop is also called a runway -- it models elite sweets. A clean, 12-seat cafe outpost for the Lady M Confection company, which wheels out Willy Wonka wonders in Europe and Asia, this location also doubles as an upscale sweet shoppe where customers can view their gift orders before sending them out for delivery all around the United States. The signature selection is Lady M's Mille Crepe, a cake made of 20 paper-thin crepes layered with custard that is also available by the slice. There are espressos, teas, wines and gourmet sandwiches, but frankly, once you lay eyes on Le Gateau New Yorkais, a chocolate crumb-crusted cheesecake, or Potiron Mousse, a memorable pumpkin pie, you'll forget your reason for existence and pray to sweet God that he'll forgive you for melting right there on the marble counter.
