The hallmark of La Grenouille -- its abundant and grand floral arrangements -- had pragmatic origins in 1962, as a way to filter direct sunlight on the tables up front without curtains (too dark), or tinting (too gauche). The custom grew to become the most distinctive feature of this classic French restaurant, eliciting customer Salvador Dali to remark to the owner, "You throw money out the windows, but it comes back to you through the doors." In keeping with the name (taken from the original owner Mr. Masson's nickname for the co-owner, his wife, "ma petite grenouille," or, "my little frog"), frog is available, as are other typical French dishes such as chateaubriand and braised oxtail in Burgundy wine sauce, while the lobster and tarragon ravioli is a perennial favorite. Both decor and service are old-school upscale, with tuxedo-bedecked waiters serving a distinguished clientele who dress the part in gowns and suits (jacket and tie required). It's hard to imagine this pricey piece of real estate used to be a run-down artist's studio in a less-than-desirable neighborhood -- that was back in 1962. Tidbit: The upstairs room was once the home of Antoine de St. Exupery, author of 'Le Petit Prince.' -- Dan Glass

How to explain the joy that La Grenouille offers? Immediately eliminate any thoughts of lucre. What this beautiful environment brings to the exquisite cuisine makes for whatever time you spend supreme experience. Service is grandly old fashioned, with one small exception for those, perhaps, more or less not known to the staff, since the regulars are, frankly, seated with special care in the restaurant's front room This, however, disconcertingly snobbish to.some, is not unusual in New York unfortunately, if understandingly.

My Fiancee took me out on a romantic night in NYC. First we ate at this restaurant which was amazing. I had the scallops and he ordered the steak. Both devine. The french fries were the best I ever had. Afterwards he took me to Rockerfeller Center and propsed. The restaurant setting was a perfect beginning to a most memorable night!

Excellent service can never replace fine food and preparation. In the case of this eatery, it does not have to: "Aces" on all counts! Also, "tres" romantic. Oo, la-la...

Wonderful and My Favorite

Been there multiple times and never was disappointed. While pricey, it is worth every nickel. Better have a souffle while you are there and order it with the dinner so it is ready in time for dessert. Ohh la la.
