The Maritime Hotel may have a seafaring, 'Love Boat'-type atmosphere, but the Italian restaurant located within is strictly land-based. Large vintage Italian film posters adorn the curved white-brick walls, and popular Italian exports such as Campari liquor and San Marzano tomatoes line the perimeter of the ceiling. The feel is hip downtown cool, with a little Italian mercato thrown in for authenticity. The flames from the arched brick oven in the background and the overstuffed, subtly stylized rounded booths create a down-home environment ideal for a meal of octopus pasta with mint red wine, or margherita pizza with a Peroni. La Bottega actually shares the Maritime's outdoor patio, a space filled with round Japanese lanterns hanging from trees that glow blue from strings of Christmas lights wrapped around their trunks. -- Ashley Lederer

a positive note

La Bottega is a great, cute place. The food has much improved recently, I believe there is a new chef. Always a great atmosphere, beautiful booths, and a great outside tables in summer. A reservation is a must, guratees a good experience. The service is usually quite good, only sometimes it gets very busy. La Bottega is also great for large parties, I've had my birthday party on their patio the last 2 summers and it was a lot of fun.

HATE IT

I went here last night with 3 friends for dessert. we were seated outside and waited about 10 minutes for service. no one came, so i went to the bartender to ask and he said someone would come . no one ever did. it was really windy outside so we moved inside. no one came again and i asked one of the bus boys if there was a waitress. he asked one of the waitresses to wait on us and she shook her head no and said thats my my section. so we waited at least another 10 minutes and no one ever came to serve us. so we moved to a booth hoping we would have better luck. still no one came. i asked a waitress who kept passing us if we could get some food. she said someone would come. so after about another 10 minutes i was really pissed and hungry. it was as if we were invisible. we werent loud or drunk and stupid. just 4 regular people wanting some dessert after buddakan which was great. so after about a 1/2 hour of this waiting i was about to loose my mind and figured WTF. i stood up on the seat of the booth and starting waving at the help and NO ONE even stopped and asked WTF i was doing. now i love that you can do just about anything in ny and no one cares but i was actually TRYING to get attention and still no one cared. so of course it was pathetically funny at this point and we left. i spoke to the bartender again and told him my issue. he wouldnt let me speak to the manager and basically told me "oh well, you should have come to the bar and order". i was here once before for drinks and didnt have a problem, but i'm not going to seat 4 people at a bar to eat dessert when there were tons of tables open. for the record that was my first time ever standing on the seat in the middle of a restaurant and the last time i'll ever go to la bottega. and the last time my 3 friends will ever go there again.
