Rate and Write a Review Short for kaiseki -- the culinary sub-genre of mini-meals associated with ancient tea ceremonies in Japan -- Kai offers one of the most unique dining experiences in the city. Situated on the second floor above its downstairs tea boutique parents, Kai boasts an intimate dining room that is Zen-clean, with a black bar, rich wood, warm light and soothing suede. Hitoshi Kagawa's menu, which fuses Japanese cuisine with French flavors, is available in numerous tiered prix-fixe combinations, each of which proudly parades delicate little courses. For example, you could start with Deai, like bites of smoked duck as delectable appetizers, followed by lily bulb soup, salt-crusted black cod, soba noodles and sencha green tea. A la carte and simpler lunch menus are available at Kai, which translates as 'gathering,' but if you're seeking a singular culinary excursion, put yourself in the creative and capable hands of Kyoto-conjuring Kagawa. -- Yon Motskin
