Old joke: A classic is something everybody wants to have read, but nobody wants to read. In this sense, Junior's, a Brooklyn landmark since 1950, is a classic restaurant. Everybody raves about Junior's cheesecake and the egg creams, but where are the lines around the block on Sunday? Truth is, Junior's is a perfectly serviceable restaurant and delicatessen with a somewhat inflated reputation that results in slightly inflated prices. The latkes, pastrami and blintzes are good, but not earth-shattering. The waitresses bust your chops, but you don't have to hump it out to Brooklyn for attitude. In the end, Junior's is remarkable for its survival as much as for the cheesecake. Set in a far corner of downtown Brooklyn at the Flatbush end of the Fulton Mall, Junior's draws its daytime regulars from nearby Long Island University and from the big phone company office across the street; at night, there's a lively scene in the brassy cocktail lounge. -- Adam Mazmanian
