If you are looking for a quaint (though not quiet) country setting, Il Buco is about as close as you can get without leaving the city. Owners Donna Lennard and Alberto Avalle originally opened this hole-in-the-wall (Il Buco literally means "the hole" in Italian) as an antique store a few years ago, then decided to sell wine and food as well, and they soon realized that more people were interested in buying tapas than rust-covered watering cans. From the original regulars who happily nibbled Italian and Spanish morsels amidst broken-down wheelbarrows and antiques, Il Buco's following has grown. Reservations are a must, especially on weekends, when the kitchen is open until 2 a.m. Il Buco's menu features such Mediterranean-inspired dishes as salt baked fish, garlicky grilled langoustines and wild boar sausage with corona beans. The wine list is considerable, and dotted with unusual Italian selections, which is fitting since the wine cellar here is reputed to have been the inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story, The Cask of Amontillado.

Unbelievably noisy and crowded. Can't hear yourself think let alone hear anyone with you. Service is poor and sparse. Food quality is quite variable. Never again!

Overated Diner Food
By ninedesign on 05/19/2006
This restaurant is attractive and comfortable, to bad the food is laugable, only to be outdone by the incompetent wait staff. My $30 Fire Roasted Pig, arrived as two thin slices of roast pork, on a tiny bed of cold potatoes. Truly laughable, dry and without any flavor. Bread is a bunch of cut up pieces, hey at this price can I get a whole slice of bread? The waiter was with us for 2 minutes, when we asked him questions about the specials he didn't have the time to answer, and didn't return for 10 minutes, and still couldn't asnwer a singel question about the food, the room was practically empty by the way. My friend ordered the lamb rague, which was the equivelent of about 4 fork fulls. We asked for some shaved cheese, and fresh pepper, which arrived after we finished our meal. We ordered wine, but alas it seems they have a small perecentage of the list, in house at any time, and few of those are acutally of the vintage listed. This place is laughable , and the attitude of the staff needs much improvement. Clearly the staff knows little about running a restaurant, they are amatures at best and the managment should be shot. This once nice restaurant, is now left to those that don't know any better, if you do go, be prepared to stand up and ask for what you expect, or get ripped off. At these prices, with this food, you can find a lot better, without looking to far.
