The independent coffee shop is disappearing about as fast as the independent bookstore. And with the infiltration of Starbucks (over 160 in Manhattan alone), the future looks bleak for cafe patrons who enjoy chalkboard menus, nicked wooden tables and, well, character. With a sigh of relief, locals embrace the Grey Dog for its well-brewed coffee as well as its nonconformist attitude. The humble haunt's warmth comes from its scattered New England-ish decorations, like oars crisscrossed above the curtained windows and sundry colorful lanterns hanging off the walls. A place to relax with friends or alone, Grey Dog offers soothing drinks like hot apple cider, tea, various coffees and a decent selection of bottled beers. Thick hearty sandwiches and homemade soups can be ordered at the counter and everything is freshly prepared. For you early birds, there are hot and cold breakfast items to choose from as well as the aroma of freshly brewing coffee to wake you up. -- Ashley Lederer
