So this is where all the big spenders go. Enter into the vast and classic columns of the casually elegant Gotham Bar and Grill and you'll soon see why this is one of Manhattan's most consistently raved-about fine food establishments. Sophisticated, skillful and sometimes schmaltzy, chef Alfred Portale serves up an exquisite menu of delectable contemporary American fare. If your date doesn't love you already, he/she will after a night out here, especially if you dress to the nines (read: black tie) and sip one of the dozens of wines from the long sidebar. Portale's signature is tall dishes: He stacks ingredients into towering architecture on your plate. His best feat may be his seafood salad, littered with scallops, squid, octopus and other underwater treats. The menu changes seasonally, but the striped bass with roast fennel and roast pheasant are sure-fire hits. -- Yon Motskin

Excellent upscale dining

We were there for our first time for lunch, superbly decorated and superior food. The name "Bar and Grill" is definately misleading. Our one complaint, if any, would be to move the pricing from expensive to very expensive. We had one glass of wine ($18), although it was excellent (Pinot Noir), one salad, a chicken entree, a sea bass entree, one coffe, one pot of tea and two desserts...$111.00 without tip. We'll be back and will reccommend this resturant to our friends

The Gotham Grill has major talent in the kitchen. The food has been consistently outstanding, though the piled-high presentation is getting a bit grating. Worse, however, is the fact that the place has badly needed a makeover for the past 3 years. The Gotham is becoming a monument of the '80's. Wait another 5 year for the redecoration, and it might get back its borderline hip status. For now, it's mostly investment bankers happy to have gotten reservations.
