Gorilla Coffee   

Despite its name, you won't find any jungle-themed wallpaper, barbaric service or complimentary bananas at Gorilla Coffee. Instead, you'll discover a selection of organic Fair Trade coffee drinks in spick-and-span surroundings. So what's with the name? "Gorillas are very strong -- just like our coffee," explains owner Darleen Scherer, who roasts the extra-bold beans right inside the store. Even the decaf has depth, owing its power to decaffeinated Sumatra beans brewed at espresso-strength. In an effort to be socially conscious, Scherer only serves Fair Trade coffee at this Park Slope cafe, a practice that benefits the low-income farmers who grow the beans, rather than the omnipresent middleman. "I want my customers to feel good about the product they're buying," she says. Along with the usual suspects -- lattes, cappuccinos, mochas -- Gorilla also serves a variety of baked treats and icy granitas, a sweet, slushy drink flavored in caramel, mocha or coffee.
