Leave all images of the Muppets behind. Gonzo, which means 'cool' in Italian slang (and 'bizarre' or 'crazy' in American slang), serves up chef Vincent Scotto's simple yet fresh take on Italian fare. Formerly of Fresco and Scopa, chef Scotto's cuisine is far from a laughing matter, although this seriously delicious food should bring a smile to your face. The menu is broken into bar snacks called cicchetti (little plates), entrees and sides meant to be shared, with offerings including the signature thin-crusted grilled pizza topped with choices like tomato and cheese or roasted corn and potatoes, penne arrabiata with ricotta, calf's liver sauteed with onions and pancetta, baby chicken with lemon and sage, roasted monkfish with sauteed onions, roasted asparagus with pancetta, onions, Parmesan and a fried egg, and 'smashed' Yukon gold potatoes with extra-virgin olive oil. Set in a cozy Greenwich Village brownstone, Gonzo boasts a dining room that exudes a simple and comfortable vibe, with walls done in warm yellow and cherry red tones, candle sconces, low ceilings and a cozy bar area, all perfect for a group or a couple to relax, throw back a few glasses of vino, and mangia, mangia, mangia. -- Amanda Dorato

Some of the best pizza in the city, and there seasonal pastas are unusual and satifying. The wine list has extraordinary Italian choices by the glass as well.

I normaly don't expect much when I go to a restaurant with a large group, but I was pleasantly surprised at the level of service and quality of food the other night at "Gonzo Restuarant". when we went with a party of 14. We started out with the best version of thin crusted flat bread style pizza I can remember (my favorite was wild mushrooms with carmalized cippolini onions) followed by entrees that were spot on. From fish to meat to pasta, all were perfectly prepared. The specialized side dishes were amazing. I have never tasted anything as rich and delicious as Gonzo's amazing version of the normally humble creamy polenta. It was just incredible. As were the roasted wild mushrooms and spiced sweet potatoes. They were to die for. Then came the deserts. WOW!! The wines are exeptional and worth the price of admission. I have never taken the time to write a restaurant review before. Good or bad. However, this time I was overwheled with the overall quality of food and service displayed to our difficult large party.

Gonzo - what a horror!
By kattnip19 on 08/07/2004
Recently, I had a meal at Gonzo for the first (and last) time. The food was good (though over-priced), the service was very good, but half-way through our meal, my friend and I heard shouting in the restaurant. We became alarmed, thinking something was really wrong. Soon after, we realized it was this big fat man yelling at one of the employees. We asked our server who the man was and when we were told it was the chef/owner, we were horrified! How could he yell at an employee within hearing range of his guests? We later found out that this was not a rare occurrence, that it happens all the time. Needless to say, our evening was ruined. Not only will we never be back, we will make sure none of our friends ever go there, either.
