Giorgio DeLuca, founder of the gourmet grocery Dean & DeLuca, expands his empire with this modern cafe in Tribeca. The Brooklyn-born owner describes it as an "archeological dig of his history," which means the all-day menu and espresso bar is international American with Italian-accents. Housed in a clean, narrow space, the central focus is the long glass-top counters with soft lighting where diners eat communally. An American-Anglo breakfast fills up with bangers, grits, flapjacks and black truffles, while lunch leads to mango duck salad and homemade meatballs. Dinner is mostly cichetti, which are Venetian appetizers (think Italian tapas), but does showcase a wood-chip grill for a few steak and lamb chop entrees as well as a cheese and wine course. A mini-market reminds diners why they don't shop at other supermarkets anymore, with pre-packed sandwiches, organic eggs, French butters and fine mustards to go.
