The kind of restaurant everyone wants in their neighborhood, Gennaro houses 23 tables and exudes a sophisticated simplicity that attracts couples and large gatherings alike. Make no mistake, the food is the main event at this much-loved, somewhat secret local gem. Gennaro Picone, owner and chef of this Upper West Side hot spot, has created a solid menu of robust Italian fare with dishes like tortino di patate e funghi (warm potato and portobello tart with goat cheese) and stinco di agnello (braised lamb shank with Israeli couscous.) Numerous inventive specials are offered daily and constitute another dimension of delectable choices. This, along with a hospitable staff and low prices to boot, will have you dog-earing this restaurant in your phonebook. Reservations are not accepted (and neither are credit cards) so come early with lots of cash, and don't carp about the inevitable wait; it's worth it. -- Ashley Lederer

All I have to say is wow!

Decor is not important here because it's not really fancy. What is important is the food. Everything on the menue is delicious and succulent. No need to add salt or pepper to anything you get because it comes in perfection. I love going here and do so every couple of months because of the location. Of all the italian restaurants Ive eaten at in the city...and it's been alot, this one's in my top 2.

These people are crazy!

Gennaros is amazing. The owner came straight from Italy so it IS very authentic. They have been in gourmet magazine for their tiramisu and rigatoni and zagat gives them a good rating as well. It can get a bit noisy, I agree with that, however, it is because its a small place that fills up and the people get a bit loud. Their food is delicious and they always have interesting desserts and appitizers coming out all the time. The staff is super friendly but be prepared to wait if your going on a friday night at 8 becasue they dont take reservations. I go there all the time all the way from the east village so it must be good. This restaurant is delicious, especially compared to the oh so over-rated Max's. The only person who leaves unsatisfied is the person who goes there expecting to spend $10 and the person who wants what everyone else is serving. For meat-eaters, get the baby lamb chops; for veggies - try the gnocchi. Always get the antipasto and stuff with a dessert...and dont forget the wine!!!

The food ma be good, but the locale needs some sound insulation very badly: you cannot hear yourself when the tables are full... So, you eat and keep mum. Or bring hear plugs. But that is not the Italian way....

Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee Fare

When I was growing up, I used to love "Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee" Spaghetti & Meatballs in a Can. This reminded me of the good old days...old food in a Can!!!
