Like the nearby Brooklyn Social Club on Smith Street, Frankies Spuntino is an attempt to get to the Old-World roots of Italian-American traditions. It couldn't have better location. Frankies is located deep in the heart of the yet ungentrified south of Carroll Gardens, where a wife-beater isn't an ironic fashion statement so much as what you wear when you beat your wife. Spuntino is Italian for snack, and Frankies (named for its two owners, Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo) is intended to be more of a neighborhood drop-in spot than a destination restaurant. Nevertheless, it's packed with the owners' celeb pals, like Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson. The restaurant opens at 8AM for espresso and biscotti, and serves wine and cheese deep into the night. Stop by at an odd hour for artisanal cheeses, cured meats, olives and a glass of Italian wine. Or else come by at mealtime for classic Mediterranean-style grilled fish or a zippy panini. Though you wouldn't guess it from the austere, dark interior, they're wired for wi-fi, so bring your laptop and bring cash -- they don't take credit cards.
