After great critical success with Chickenbone Cafe in Brooklyn and 5 Ninth in the Meatpacking District, chef Zak Pelaccio turns his attention to Fatty Crab, a more casual joint down the street on Hudson. Fatty Crab is an ode to Malaysia, and the time Pelaccio spent there. Colorful chopsticks sit in cups atop dark-stained wooden tables, a nice accent that ties in the deep red hue of the walls. The food totters from salty to sweet, not to mention hot and a little bit of sour. A green mango off the snack portion of the menu comes alive with its sugar-chili-salt sprinkling, and the short-rib rendang, a house specialty, braised in kaffir lime and coconut milk, is fall-off-the-bone tender. Salads and noodle dishes like the brothy Java mee with shrimp egg noodles fill out the rest of the very tempting menu.

Great Food, Great Drinks

The food here is amazing. I got the chili crab and it was simply divine. The prices aren't bad either and the space is cozy but unpretentious. I was with a large group of people and although we waited a while to be seated our tempers were quickly cooled with a round of Tiger Beers.
