Editor's Note: Closed as of January 2007 Not just another link in Stephen Hanson's chain of world domination (his NYC restaurants include Blue Water Grill, Atlantic Grill and Isabella's), Barca 18 is a large, upscale Spanish-style seafood restaurant with real pedigree. The captain steering this ship is Eric Ripert, the chef from the city's top-rated Le Bernardin, and he's brought along a few former first mates. The dining room is notable for its communal tables, which makes the sizable space feel strangely intimate. The modern menu mixes Spanish tapas with rich entrees, like a monkfish loin with chorizo and mushrooms, marinated rabbit, oxtail with roasted garlic, and paella. Creative cocktails concoct names like Dali and Gaudi. The impressive Spanish wine list, divided by regions (Castilla, Catalunya), includes a grape glossary -- for example, a Manto Negro only comes from Majorca -- ensuring that you're an oenophile before you order.

sophisticated, not good

the ambiance is nice, but the food is horrible, and its a good thing they give small portions, because its not good enough to eat. this is a nice place to have a drink, and be on your blackberry at the same time, because then you will fit right in.

Frenchstyle portions in Spain?
By dolphinity28 on 09/17/2006
My expectations where high since I frequent many of the B.R. Guests restraunts in NYC... The leather bound tables and heavy menu books were more filling than the meal. I wasn't looking for family-style, but the appetizers where so teeny tiny it was difficult to share and taste w/ friends. The food taste as well as the portion size (which oddly got smaller with each order) was not worth the visit. The Paella De Carne, the short ribs and the halibut where average. The fritters (a dessert) was a definite blahh and the cheese cake although somewhat tasty was probably more suited for a frenchman who is too greedy to share. The ice cream was the tastiest thing on the menu, but the cookies that adorned the plate where not. They where dry sugar cookies, not worth dipping into the icecream. Dos Caminos or the Blue Fin are definitely a better choice from the BR Guest family I will continue to patron them. As for Barca 18 I am scratching that off my BR Guest dining circut card.
