Closed as of January 2007 Situated on the site of the defunct Cent'Anni, 50 Carmine puts a modernized spin on old favorites. Tangerine shallot vinaigrette is added to a rucola-pomegranate salad; napping wide noodles are topped in a wild boar sauce; and the trendy grain farro is added to pan-roasted baby beets and Brussels sprout. More traditional palates may opt for staples such as steak, pork chops and lamb, or pasta dishes like pennette with garlic sausage and broccoli rabe, or the 'curls with many cheeses.' The chef, Sara Jenkins (formerly of Patio Dining and Il Buco), is credited with bringing "inspired confident cooking" to this elegant dining room, which glows from its soft lighting and rich wood-paneled walls. On summer eves, the floor-to-ceiling windows are flung open to the street; in less clement weather, 50 Carmine attracts those longing to bask in its inviting Italian warmth. -- Rhonda Markowitz
