Rate and Write a Review Much has changed since the City Bakery's Maury Rubin burst upon the New York baked-goods scene with his Mondrian-influenced tarts that taste even better than they look. He's opened and closed a City Bakery in the AT&T Building on Madison Avenue, started an ambitious wholesale division, and even tried his hand at glazed donuts. Take his hot chocolate, for example. It's so rich and chocolaty you'll never be able to drink Swiss Miss again. It even comes with a homemade marshmallow. Or his lemonade: The plain is fabulous, the vanilla bean, ginger, and strawberry are just as good, and there are even flavors like cilantro and baby arugula for the adventurous. Other signature delicacies include an insanely buttery plum-almond tart and an Indian pudding apple pie made with molasses, cinnamon, and ginger. Rubin's salad bar offers up both the unusual (barley with sauteed cremini mushrooms) and the standard (eggless Caesar salad). Or go for the grilled cheese sandwich of the day and a cup of master soup maker Ludmilla Biderman's tomato vegetable soup. But get your delicacies early, because City Bakery closes before dinnertime.
