Much has changed since the City Bakery's Maury Rubin burst upon the New York baked-goods scene with his Mondrian-influenced tarts that taste even better than they look. He's opened and closed a City Bakery in the AT&T Building on Madison Avenue, started an ambitious wholesale division, and even tried his hand at glazed donuts. Take his hot chocolate, for example. It's so rich and chocolaty you'll never be able to drink Swiss Miss again. It even comes with a homemade marshmallow. Or his lemonade: The plain is fabulous, the vanilla bean, ginger, and strawberry are just as good, and there are even flavors like cilantro and baby arugula for the adventurous. Other signature delicacies include an insanely buttery plum-almond tart and an Indian pudding apple pie made with molasses, cinnamon, and ginger. Rubin's salad bar offers up both the unusual (barley with sauteed cremini mushrooms) and the standard (eggless Caesar salad). Or go for the grilled cheese sandwich of the day and a cup of master soup maker Ludmilla Biderman's tomato vegetable soup. But get your delicacies early, because City Bakery closes before dinnertime.

This Place is Great. (but why are people so skimpy at the salad bar?)
By joncflc on 02/20/2005
The old city bakery has been gone for a few years now, and all the ambitions for the new location were not fufilled. Still, this place is great. It is often crowded but the crowd is not all that annoying. I like the catfish, the jasmine rice with the white beans, the chocolate cookie with the white chocolate chips, the lemonade, and more. I miss the potato soup that they had at the old location.

I thought the huge chocolate chip and melted chocolate cookies were amazing (and they are some of the best I've every had)... then I tried the hot chocolate. Wow!

We never leave New York without lunch at City Bakery. It's the kind of place I want to take home. Simply prepared delicious salads, sandwiches and soup are perfect for a casual quick lunch. The desserts are great, too. Located near ABC home and Carpet makes a nice outing.
