Jerk is hot. Even if you're used to scorching vindaloos and blinding southern spicy chicken, this Caribbean spice rub, made from scotch bonnet peppers, may take you to a whole new level. Of course, this is the best reason to give it a try. If you're already a fan of the jerk, the curried goat and oxtail stew are also worth a taste. Brawta also features a variety of fresh fish dishes cooked in fiery island spices. Go with the ackee and cod, the pan-fried porgies or the kingfish; the fancier fishes on the menu don't stand up as well to the intense heat. Homemade fruit drinks or a kind of sweet tea brewed from sorrel leaves will help tamp the fires. The space is basic and unpretentious, but if you're just in the neighborhood shopping for antiques on Atlantic Avenue, the beef patties and cod cakes to go make a great snack. -- Adam Mazmanian

Skip It ! Skip It! Skip It!

I say skip this place. While the food was good, it sure wasn't great enough to warrent a cold hostess and a wobbley table! After waiting several uncomfortably minutes to contact the one waitress in the joint, she totally gave us major attitude as if we where edging in on her personal time. NOW HERE IS THE KICKER: For a meal with two people that came up to approxiametely $50.00 they hit us with 17% gratuity just for sitting at a table. What?! NOT COOL, esspecially for a Carribean place. I say Hit up Sugar Cane on Flatbush Ave. or Negril Village in the city for excellent food commeasurate with real Carribean sensabilities!

The service and prices are ridiculous. Sugar Cane on Flatbush Ave has much better grub and better service.

The food's okay, but the poor service leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Do the math: there are only 10 tables in the place and they tell you on the menu that the overworked cook in the tiny kitchen needs a minimum 20 minutes to make seafood dishes for each diner -so don't expect to eat less than 35-40 minutes after sitting down. The reality is that you can find equivalent or better Caribbean cooking at a dozen other places around NYC. Try Mike's International on Flatbush Avenue or the wonderful new place, Brooklyn Exposure, on Bedford Avenue. At least you'll get service.

While this Jamaican restaurant is small, its very intimate. The owners should be proud of the delicious and artistacally arranged food. For the non-West Indian native, the choice will give you a taste into the flavor and style of the Islands. Brawta is always packed when I go there. The snapper is great; the codfish cakes in tamarind sauce is delectable; try those. There are dishes for the vegetarian so no one is left out. Go try it, its intimate and the food is GREAT.
