Rate and Write a Review Every struggling actor has spent a lot of time in a box -- a tiny, stuffy, windowless theater. Along with a couple of partners, Simon Hammerstein, the young descendant of musical legend Oscar Hammerstein, is dispelling that discomfort by doing "dinner theater for the younger generation." The Box reimagines this large historic Lower East Side building, a former sign factory, as part restaurant and part stage: a surrealistic speakeasy. With live shows ranging from indie rock bands to Kerouac readings to Wooster Group theater to Puccini opera, the vintage vaudevillian adds even more V.I.P. credibility by enlisting thespians like Jude Law to be on its board.
