Like a spicy-hot jumping bean, this mainstay East Village Latin-loco-lounge has eluded price hikes and turnover trends and remained reliable, affordable and did we mention, hot-hot-hot? Located in what locals call the "Nexus of the Universe" (First St. and First Ave.), the festive and boisterous cheetah-printed Boca Chica serves up sizzling flavor-flav South American style, with coconut, chili and garlic tastes hailing from Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic and other countries where the words "salsa" and "spice" don't just refer to food. After breaking the ice with plantain chips and black-bean dip, regulars go straight for the Pinones (plantains filled with sliced beef), and the smoky shrimp chipotle, which has attracted a cult following among those who can withstand center-of-the-earth-like heat. In fact, the tangy meat and seafood dishes are so spicy that it's probably a good idea to keep the waitstaff tethered to your party on sangria alert. -- Yon Motskin (Photo: Noah Kalina)

BE WARNED!
By bridysales on 09/27/2006
Oh Boy has 3years made a BIG BAD Differance!?, Compared to the 2003 reviews....Ok, I had the job to find a place to eat locally to where all 7 of us were going last night. AND, I FAILED! The Area, The Building, The Inside & The hostess, ALL matched; They ALL physically looked Dirty & Hard to look at... Sorry to be so blent but I really wish someone was this direct with me, in their review. We were seatted in a tight booth, even though there were only 4 people in the place, But i guess they didn't want to work, & maybe put together some tables. The Waiter seemed more interested in chatting with the bus-boy. The Food & Bar had Limited choices. Latin food, huh? with only 1kind of beans (black beans!,like it or not). Food was just okay, Service was Horrible & they had the nerve to add on 18% gratuity to the check... LOL :NEVER AGAIN:

As a girl from the Dominican Republic, I was a little homesick and missed the great food, but once i tasted the food at Boca Chica I felt right at home. The food was excellent and the service was good. Boca Chica is, by far, my favorite restaurant!
