Rate and Write a Review A steakhouse recommendation from Truman Capote is like a peep show reference from a nun. He's so tiny -- what does he know about meat? Nonetheless, Capote favored the Irish-owned Bobby Van's chain, which branched out from the Hamptons into Washington and New York (this is the third location in Manhattan, along with 54th Street and Park Avenue). The atmosphere is masculine, harkening back to days of suspenders and cigars and cholesterol-free consciences. Fat cat Wall Streeters are within barking distance of the multi-level space, a beautiful former bank that boasts Bobby Van's more casual Grill downstairs. Both levels feature a full bar and share the same kitchen, but owners consider them almost two separate restaurants. Prime dry-aged porterhouses, sirloins and filet mignon are killer, as are the big lobsters, escargots and the potato wrapped Chilean sea bass. Someone said something about dessert and wine and scotch, but by then the dizzy euphoria was already flowing through the arteries.
