Bringing affordable food to the masses may not be an original idea, but in the hands of Lidia Bastianich and her son Joseph, it is a very appetizing one. After the success of their East Side eatery Felidia (an upscale Manhattan mainstay since it opened in 1981), this mother and son team decided to find a way to offer their authentic Italian-American food at more accessible prices. Thus in 1993 Becco was born. Becco -- derived from the Italian word 'beccare' which means to nibble -- is now a mainstay of its own on Restaurant Row, and regularly attracts tourists as well as New York natives. There is always a prix-fixe meal for lunch or dinner, which includes unlimited servings of three daily pasta specials. All the wines are Italian of course, and many bottles run only $20 -- unless you insist on bucking the bargain trend by ordering from the pricier reserve list. After a languid meal at this artfully appointed restaurant, you'll recognize that Becco truly is a humanitarian effort and a labor of familial love. -- Ashley Lederer

Pleasantly surprised
By Candipluc on 06/26/2008
We ate at Becco's last night and got in with a party of 6 at about 5:15 p.m, (pre-theater). They told us we would have to be out by 6:30 but they never really rushed us and we left around 7 p.m. I was a bit skeptical when we walked in because the noise level and the flurry in the restaurant is on high. However even with all the commotion, I am very happy to report that the food was excellent and so was the service. After a while, you adjust to the noise level and the place runs like a well oiled machine, accomodating the masses but not sacrificing the quality of the food. I had the special grouper and it was great. My friend had the pollo limone and it was very tasty. Also reasonably priced for the area and the quality. Would definitely go again.

Being from Ohio it was a real treat to find this resturant. Makes me realize I didn't know what real italian tasted like. I will go back on my next trip for sure.
