Rate and Write a Review Chef Hemant Mathur (Tamarind) imported his concept of 'original Indian food' from downtown to the Upper East Side. Along with chef Suvir Saran, he created a menu that takes a step away from traditional Indian cuisine and adds a little bit of creativity to every dish. Inspiration comes from their respective heritages and life experiences, which stem from many different regions in India. The menu boasts farm-raised Madras chicken and apricot stuffed lamb fillets in addition to classics like saag and tandoori. Known for its extremely friendly and very informed staff, Amma has a small but chic dining room whose walls are decorated with a warm wash of color and funky metal light fixtures. But along with the high concept, comes a hard to swallow high price. A seven-course tasting starts at $50 -- a far cry from the $5 brunches on East Sixth Street. -- Ashley Lederer
