In the early hours of the morning, at the end of Ninth Avenue, a dilapidated townhouse with chipping white paint sits with vacant, closed eyes. As the sun rises and the ovens inside are switched on, this building wakes up as 5 Ninth -- one of the go-to restaurants in the sizzling Meatpacking District. The restaurant's decor takes full advantage of its domestic location: the cocktail area can be found in the entryway, outdoor dining in the backyard and dining room on the second floor. But the hottest spot is the reservations-only lounge on the top floor. The man of the house is chef Zakary Pelaccio, from the much-heralded but now-defunct Chickenbone Cafe, serving up global fare with a sophisticated air. With a love of pork that rivals Mario Batali, Pelaccio peppers the menu with the essence of pig -- there is even a dancing cartoon pig holding a small sign that says "Eat me" on the delivery cart parked out front. Dishes like jelly belly (a combination of jellyfish and pork belly) are prepared with serious precision, but clearly 5 Ninth is built on a foundation of irreverent humor.

AWFUL service
By frankaholic on 02/18/2006
I am a native New Yorker, and do not need to be waited on hand and foot. I don't even mind a server with a little edge. But here, they were just plain rude; And the bar staff was miserable.

Not What It Seems
By josphineelle on 11/18/2004
From the front door one is to believe this is one of the most desirable places to be in this area. Danny our bartender was great! He set the tone for this hip happening place- never to be regained from the bar. His drinks were some of the Best I've ever tasted in this town. While our waiter was intriguing enough, the food did nothing to keep our attention. When I complained of the saltiness(enough from a whole salt shaker) and the lamb was COLD, he did not support me. Instead he retorts behind my back, (I don't think they eat out very often). How offending! Forget this one and go to Spice Market where at least they stay happening until past 1:00. Maybe the Mayor got all the customer service when he ate here. While in compensation we were given free dessert- mine was tasteless pumpkin pie. If I'm going to the big playground to play I want to feel the G-force of the megaslide, not the bouncey, bouncey of the teeter tot.
