Looks like Bayside may be going all Tribeca on us. "Yeah, it's not normal for Queens," says management of the stylish decor of 39 East, the Asian-fusion restaurant on Bell Boulevard. Neither is the cuisine for a borough known more for myriad ethnic eateries than trendy restaurant lounges. Executive chef Taweewat Hurapan, formerly of Rain, combines Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Korean cooking with Italian ingredients and French presentational flair. The results are dishes such as Southeast angel hair with sirloin, Chinese broccoli, and three kinds of soy sauces, and osso buco with shitake mushrooms, lemongrass lime sauce and spinach fettuccini. The crispy whole fish is the signature, served on a bed of roasted sweet-potato mash and mango chili sauce, with filets arranged artfully. The former movie theater is now a bi-level space with a private dining room upstairs and a colorful main room with sleek deco furniture, although traditional elements remain, such as the black-and-red lacquer accents and a variety of Asian art and sculpture. Waiting for a table is pleasurable in the spacious bar, where they make all-too-trendy (but still good) lychee martinis and other drinks with fresh juice. Who knows? Maybe Bell Boulevard is the next Smith Street.

This was my second time here, and it was great. The food was great and the service was great. It definitely reminds me of a nyc restaurant, the decor is very nice. I cant wait to go back.

This is not Manhattan

The place is very nice, classy to be in, however, the menu is very limited. Both items my friend and I ordered the waiter said, no, don't get that, it's not good.. So why is it on the menu then!! $10 for a drink is crazy for Bell Blvd. There's no reason I'd go back..

I was very impressed when I first walked in. I said to myself, am I in Queens or Soho. Anyway, I was very impressed with the food and the service. The sun fish is to die for.I am glad we finally have a restaurant that can compete with some of Manhattans finest.

This restaurant brings a very special air to Bayside, now brimming with restaurants. The waiting bar is beautifully appointed and is superbly staffed, David the bartender knows what's current and what's traditional. The host and hostesses were courteous and extremely helpful. The wait staff were attentive, but not too, and were aware of our needs at all times. The Inside out -sushi roll was excellent and the fois gras was mouth wateringly smooth and delicious. The crispy whole fish is an experience and the osso bucco done just right, when asked to slightly undercook the pork tenderloin special, it was done. Don't miss the desserts, they are beautifully presented and delicious - tri-flavored creme brulee one of the highlights. We will be back again.
