Irving Plaza is every bit a legend as the artists who have played here -- and given past appearances by Bob Dylan, Debbie Harry and Johnny Cash, that's no faint praise. The building's history is as wildly diverse as its booking schedule: Over the years, the three-level auditorium has served as Polish Army Veterans headquarters, a Yiddish theater, a burlesque house (Gypsy Rose Lee stripped here), and even a boxing arena. Today it's one of the prime midsize venues in the northeast, perfect for national acts seeking a more intimate venue or smaller bands amping up their mass appeal. From a patron's standpoint, it's no less exceptional. You can mosh with abandon at the foot of the stage -- or get out of the crush easily, taking in the whole spectacle from the safety of the balcony. Sound is excellent, and there isn't a bad sightline in the house -- unless you're occupying one of the flea-market sofas in the upstairs lounge. -- Dan Glass

Going downhill with Gorilla se
By druid5363 on 07/01/2007
What was a great place to see a show, has become a bad vibe dump. not sure what their problem is ,but we have gone to see people like Martin sexton,an ethereal, positive energy, amazingly talented singer/songwriter,and have been treated like we were "straight outta compton" by these ghetto gorillas who work security there. They seemed to be anxious to put a beating on some white people. We called the cops on them one night.Place has actually become dangerous, will never go back there.

sharon jones show sound
By godruthere on 05/21/2006
we went to the sharon jones show on 5/20/06. there were a bunch of bands with up to 16 musicians on stage at a time. at no point could you not find anyone of them in the sound mix. big ups to the sound crew!! bartenders were efficient too. the no readmittance policy kinda sucks though. i'm sure itr insurance company stuff, though. all in all it was a fine place to see a show. sharon kicked ass too.
