Located in downtown Madison, the Essen Haus will transport you to Germany with waiters in lederhosen and waitresses dressed as barmaids who'll serve you an astonishing selection of German beers (16 on tap), as well as authentic German foods and appetizers. Caution: You may have trouble staying sober at this fun-filled beer garden, which serves brews in gigantic steins and boots. Adding to the atmosphere of the bar, which has been around since 1983, are the live polka bands, who often get the mix of young and old patrons out of their seats and merrily swinging to the beat (just hopefully not from the rafters). -- Lex Lonehood

Not to eat. I didn't go here thinking "OH MY GOD I HAVE GOT TO GET ME SOME OLD WORLD GERMAN EATS!" This is a german themed bar. With some food. Try the Optimator, it's awesome. Drink out of a boot. The fries are incredible.

Disgusting
Highly recomended resturant when we moved here, proves my point that the rubes in this overgrown Mayberry don't know food.
Food is bland and tasteless. Menu is mostly comfort food. My steak was terrible. Poor childrens menu. Resturant was filthy and falling apart and we would have never ordered if we had seen the restrooms first. Health inspector needs to visit this place.
Hell Hole!
This place is nasty, the building is almost falling apart, the bathrooms smell of urine, and there was dried vomit everywhere, totally disgusting. I wonder what the kitchen is like! A cockroaches paradise, I was afraid to wear my shoes into my house after going here! I would never go to the Essen Haus ever again. TAKE YOUR CHANCES WITH THIS PLACE!
