Rate and Write a Review If you didn't know Whist was hip, you might think it was a high-end English garage sale where Queen Elizabeth's prized possessions were being hocked amongst ham hocks. As the Viceroy Santa Monica's culinary centerpiece, Whist has over 250 English china pieces nailed to the outside walls, while others are displayed meticulously on the inside. Kelly Wearstler's daring design is easily visible through a sea of greens and whites, and whether you're sitting underneath a pentagonal chandelier inside, or in one of the private cabanas outside amid the foliage-lined poolside patio, the vibe factor is as solid as the Sunset Strip, but with a cool ocean breeze all its own. Named after a four-person card game, Whist finally got into the competitive spirit as a top LA dining destination after a rocky beginning, hiring acclaimed chef Warren Schwartz (Patina and Saddle Peak Lodge) to spruce up a menu with items such as grilled wild boar bratwurst, Black Angus tenderloin and seared diver scallops with smoked ham hocks. Breakfast, lunch and a Sunday brunch are also available, as is a personalized tasting experience where guests can sit in the chef's private cabana and taste seven courses for a pre-set price. And while lines form at the door on Friday and Saturday nights to get into hotel's Cameo Bar, Whist's cabanas are the best way to feel like a VIP while dining incognito.
