For those who thought "high-end" and "hot dog" would never occupy the same sentence, time to open your mind and buns for this cheap, throwback thrill from the co-founder of Beverly Hills' Grill on the Alley. Nostalgic parents shuttle kids in bulk to this sausage-lovers heaven, with a white-picket fence, excellent outdoor patio and menu that's light year's from anything LA restaurateurs have yet to think up. Concocting such original recipes as the "Boston Dog" (a steamed dog with baked beans and Swiss cheese) and the "Polish Classic" (a garlicky pork sausage with raisin-onions), The Stand makes no attempt to hide its specialty, possessing more stylized "dogs" than the Westminster Dog Show. After you order at the counter, eat indoors in the art deco-inspired 1940s dining room or take your tray outside to the charming tree-shaded picnic area that feels more like Topanga Canyon than anything just off Ventura Boulevard. In addition to steamed "dogs" and more traditional sausages like bratwurst, The Stand appeals to those watching their waistlines, as well, offering an array of salads and specialties like the lemon-chicken sausage (a low-fat chicken sausage with red peppers, leeks and lemon on a 3-seed bun) and Murdog's protein plate: a sausage served with no bun. Blessed with the sheer audacity to open up a hot dog joint in a town legendary for its dieting, partners Richard Shapiro, Jonathan Smiga and Murray Wishengrad have seized on a brilliant theme here, one that works well with the "low-carb" contingency and parents looking for a perennial "go to" pick for the kids.

The Big Bleu Turkey Burger
By npbsue on 02/11/2008
I was at The STAND on Sunday for lunch. It was deliscious. Try the Bleu Turkey Burger with grilled onions and bacon bits. It comes with homeade chips and ranch dressing, for dipping ...Mmmmm.

hot food for a hot day
By jpelottasr on 07/14/2007
We love the Stand. The food is great and the staff are really nice, especially with our kids. (note to the guy who calls kids 'rats', just remember you were one too... maybe still are from your post). If you have kids like us, 4 and 8, this place is a boon for letting them run around while we eat and talk with our friends. Jazz nights on Thursday is nice too when the weather isn't too hot. The band sets up outside and wine can be bought by the bottle.

nice place for a hotdog stand. probably not a nicer place out there to get a dog for $1 on mondays. in nyc we've got grey's papaya, but you don't see people with kids hanging out there. the burger was good, but i didn't try a dog yet so i can't say. i'll let you know after i try it.

Great Place!
By jimlarson1964 on 07/14/2007
This place rocks. Just got back from my second time there and wanted to read what other people said about The Stand. Sorry for the folks that don't get it, but everything from my Chicago dog and fries to the cold beer in the garden was better than standing on the corner for Pink's anyday. It seems some reviewers mention other places, but if you want to stand on a hot street corner or under a highway for hotdog, God bless you... you deserve it.
