You'll probably never know the thrill of barnstorming over the snowcapped Himalayas, but thanks to The Hump, you can indulge your inner Walter Mitty with equally daring culinary explorations. No, those aren't the runway landing-strip lights aviators see upon their descent into Santa Monica airport, but rather The Hump's flaming conch, served with Japanese shiitake mushrooms and scallions. Plates like the black cod saikyo yaki and butter-smooth hamachi whiz by on their perfectly orchestrated flight routes from the kitchen and bar, for owner Brian Vidor and his superb staff map the sushi experience with the precision of epicurean air-traffic controllers. Sitting atop its roomier companion piece Typhoon, The Hump offers an intimate respite from the westside's trendier-than-thou Cal-Asian fusion joints or the draconian demands of Ventura's toro tyrants who tell you not just what to eat, but how to eat it and how much to enjoy it. If you can hear your stomach rumbling above the twin turbo-props outside, The Hump's excursion from edamame to mochi is just what you need to quell that gastro-turbulence.

This place got my newbie husband on the sushi bandwagon and for that I am eternally grateful. Great location and interesting decor. Worth a visit.

This place is good. Scary good. I ordered things there that I would NEVER order anywhere else. The Sweet Shrimp is one of the best dishes I have ever had-and they kill it in front of you.Spanish Mackeral was great too. Hump also has the best sake I've ever had. The best thing to do is just get the tasting menu. Most of the really good stuff isn't on the regular menu anyway. The only reason I gave it four stars is because after going there, I needed to sell a body part to pay the bill. Bring the big wallet if you go.

missangela2u's Review

It was wonderful the first 2 times I went, but last night was HORRIBLE! We waited 30 minutes for someone to take our order, even though the poor busgirl had asked our waiter to come help us twice. When he finally got to us, he didn't even apologize! And then, the true tragedy - the sushi was AWFUL. Completely unfresh, unappetizing and just plain gross. I will never, never go there again!
