Bring a newspaper or your unfinished copy of 'War and Peace' if you're going to endure the grueling wait for perhaps the best pancakes this side of the South Bay's Uncle Bill's Pancake House. As throngs of hipsters unite on the sidewalk pondering hangover cures while volleying club stories from the previous night, an efficient hostess seats parties of two and four amid grumbling stomachs and cool, prescribed do-it-yourself-coffee containers. If there's any doubt whether they do "AM chow" right, consider that Griddle Cafe closes its doors at 3PM, eliminating any and all uncertainty about their focus. Portions are quite big at Griddle Cafe, so be ready to take your first bite starved and your last with a disclaimer that ''you'll never do this to yourself again!'' Pancakes come either a la carte or as virtual dessert, evidenced by the quirkily titled "Boysenberry Rain" (boysenberry-filled flapjacks drizzled with boysenberry icing) and "Yellow Brick Road" (butterscotch, caramel and walnut filled pancakes). Whipped cream, M & M's and rainbow sprinkles also make cameo appearances, while the "Apple Cobbler French Toast" with baked cinnamon apples can ignite a sugar buzz with the best of 'em. Safer, more protein-packed picks include egg dishes, such as the "Tequila Sunrise" (decadent huevos rancheros), "Hunger Pangs" (three eggs and an over-sized slice of tender-baked ham) and more than 25 varieties of Chili My Soul concoctions that add substance to the sandwich-filled lunch menu. -- Gregg Rosenzweig

A must try if on sunset BLVD.. and REALLY hungry!
By Maui206 on 05/31/2008
I go to the Griddle every time i'm in LA. My friends and i always get a few different things and share it. One plate of anything on the menu will easily feed 2 or 3 people (except the omelette dishes 1 or 2). The pancakes are HUGE as you've read in the posts and really heavy, and we've never been able to finish them.. but they are eye catching when they come out, and make everyone waiting really hungry as the cute server walks by with the plate in their hand.. :) All the French toast is amazing.. the one thing we always finish and want more of. Sandwiches are all yummy as well. The waitstaff are all beautiful, and you might see "someone" while dining there. I've seen a few musicians and celebrities walk in and pick up food, or be sitting in a table next to me. Fun place.. long wait on weekends, esp Sundays.. enjoy!

Best b-fast despite the scene
By yaegermeister182 on 01/09/2007
It's true the wait it horrendous and the scenesters are cringe-worthy, b-fast at the Griddle is more than worth it. The entire menu is delicious, from all the pancake concoctions and french toast, to the egg dishes, down to the giant side of ham and, I kid you not, the best coffee. Do NOT go to the Coffee Bean across the street while you're waiting. And considering the size of the portions, it's a bargain. Split an order among 2 people... or 3.
