Design and color are at the heart of the draw for this Mediterranean-style restaurant serving seafood, meat and vegetable tapas, opened by friendly chef Albert Silvera and James Welch after a tasty summer of research in Spain. Whether you're seated in the actual courtyard, the exposed brick space with little yellow chairs and sputtering fountain, or inside the dining room with its levitating wine casks and decorative tile mosaic, it may be a good idea to stick with the servers' recommendations. On a menu that conjures up everything from spicy North African lamb sausage to dates wrapped in bacon, getting too adventuresome could be risky. But the ham-wrapped asparagus is excellent, and for dessert, there is virtual jackpot of satiation in the sampler: banana pudding with cookie crumbles, chocolate mousse and an unforgettable creamy rice pudding. There's also a charming wine menu that has insightful back stories underneath each selection, such as for the Spanish Vina Izadi "Expression" Reserva '97 Rioja, which proclaims: "With no West Coast distribution, we risked it all on the docks 'til 4AM to bring you this fantastic wine."Worthy of knowing: The Courtyard starts their week off with Flamenco Mondays, when a guitarist serenades tapas tasters and twosomes alike from 6:30-10PM, filling the night air with Spanish ballads.

Excellent fun Evening
By greeneyemedia on 06/10/2007
My boyfriend and I decided to give the Courtyard a try after hearing good reviews from friends and I must say it definitely lived up to the hype. A very crowded evening -- the place had a great energy as people were clearly having have a good time which immediately put us in the mood to have fun. Our waiter was very friendly and we started with a strawberry mojito that he recommended and it was out of this world. We then had dates in bacon, fried calamari and a steak pobre all of which were spot on. For desert we had the bread pudding which was heaven. On the way out we were asked how our meal was and invited to come back by the hostess which was a nice touch. If you want to have a fun night out-- the Courtyard will not disappoint.

great place

I'd have to agree with most of the other reviews, my experience at The Courtyard was terrific. Everything we ordered was excellent, the service was very friendly yet professional and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We ordered several things including the steak pobre, chicken paella, garlic shrimp and a wonderful watercress salad and several rounds of Sangria. I'd defiantly come back and would recommend it to others. Very European and relaxed vibe.

SIMPLY WONDERDFUL!
By rjbernhardt on 03/08/2005
My partner and I were in LA (from Phoenix) and decided to go to the Courtyard for dinner one evening. We had a SIMPLY WONDERFUL experience. The food was delicious. (Make sure to try the dates wrapped in bacon!) We also recommend the shrimp, beef and the chocolate mouse. Sample the sangrias and choose from there. You can't go wrong. All employees were friendly and helpful including the host, our waiter, our bus boy and the owner. (Twice we talked to the owner. He wanted to be sure we enjoyed ourselves, which we did!) We would recommend you going to the Courtyard. Ours was a truly special evening.

new favorite place.
By ylsjtc on 03/03/2005
The courtyard has become in one of my favorite restaurants in just the few short months it's been open. The food is great, the lamb chops and chicken paella are my favorites. I'd recommend the "piquello peppers", garlic shrimp and the spinach dish as well. Everything I've tried has been very tasty. The waiters are super nice and the service has always been excellent. They just opened for brunch too- the french toast is to die for. I think The Courtyard is a great new find that I'd highly recommend.
