Like moths to the flame, Sasabune's fire-red neon sign draws fresh fish connoisseurs to the corner of West LA's Nebraska and Sawtelle with the glowing word, "SUSHI." Once home to a fast food restaurant, Sasabune is an oddball home for a fine sushi restaurant, with its slap-dash mix of Mexican tile, brick, plaster and sparse Japanese decorations. Crowds of new and returning patrons parade daily into Sasabune, hoping to earn the favor of Chef Nobi, the restaurant's undisputed master of the menu. Take a seat at Nobi's sushi bar, and he stuffs you to the gills with omakase, his handpicked selection of the day's best offerings. Nobi's famous "chef's special" meals can include anything from a creamy, overflowing crab hand roll to a thick slab of yellowtail sushi drenched in lemon juice. Only the foolhardy dare to dictate demands at Sasabune, so keep your silly spicy tuna roll requests to yourself. At the tables, sushi a la carte is available but rarely considered. Arrive without a reservation, and you have plenty of time to think about how you'll never make that same mistake twice.
