According to legend, Saddle Peak Lodge was once a favorite stomp of Hollywood heroes Errol Flynn and Clark Gable, who shot many of their films on nearby studio lots. The original edifice is also said to have inspired the design of Charlie Chaplin and Herbert Hoover's New Mexico hunting lodges. With its upstairs library, not-too-distant waterfall and trophy animal heads, Saddle Peak Lodge has always garnered a certain mystique (was it once a bordello, as some maintain?). Either way, its rustic Las Virgenes Canyon surroundings continue to charm big-game fans, who grub on roasted elk tenderloin with Jerusalem artichokes and wild mushroom sauce, or smoked duck breast with white corn bread pudding and arugula. Dinner and decor dovetail nicely as much of what's on your plate also adorns the walls, from birds and fish to a stuffed beaver (not on the menu). A four-course prix-fixe menu varies seasonally, but might include crab salad with Haas avocado or wood fire-grilled llama with mascarpone polenta, chanterelles, roasted corn and summer truffles. When dessert rolls around, sign up for the warm banana and walnut bread pudding or the milk chocolate mousse cake with hazelnut peanut butter and espresso ice cream. A dessert sampler doles out multiple tastes including fresh berries and creme brulee. Saddle Peak Lodge has enticed Angelenos for over 100 years with its wholly unique blend of Hollywood history, mountain vistas, beastly entrees -- even lurking apparitions, depending on whom you ask and where you sit.

Exceptional

Disregard the "recent" negative reviews. Saddle Peak Lodge is an absolute treat. If you're looking to get as far away from Los Angeles as possible by driving half an hour, this is the place. You feel like you're in a hunting lodge secluded in the middle of the Yukon Territory. Not to mention the Elk was possibly the best red meat I've ever had the pleasure of sinking my teeth into. You will not be disappointed. The only possible downside was that in all the dinner lasted two and a half hours, but this was intentional and the atmosphere is such that you are in no hurry to get out the door anyways. This place deserves every official accolade it receives.

I was expecting the world, but they didn't deliver. The food was fine but I expected great. Maybe the chef was out sick.

Terrible Sevice/Cold Food
By jpfmtka on 01/15/2007
Don't bother with Saddle Peak. Everything about this restaurant has declined over the past year or so. The service is nonexistant. At our last vist, our party of 11 was expected to be content with a table designed to seat 5-6 set with FOLDING CHAIRS. After a 2 1/2 hour wait, we were served our cold entrees. A dirty ice bucket , left ffrom a previous diner's meal, remained at our table all evening. Finally, the valet's family was sleeping in a running vehicle parked next to his station. All this for $100.00 a person!
