Now in its eighth decade in business -- and showing every last day of it -- former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan's restaurant definitely has its own special charm. It's a noisy, no-nonsense, open-into-the-wee-hours landmark with elderly waiters, plain ol' American food and a very mixed crowd. The air near the kitchen is warm and smoky, while underneath the air-conditioning vents it's positively frigid. The aroma of pan-fried food hangs heavy in the air. The menu isn't printed; instead, it's posted on the walls. The dining room is usually filled to capacity with a mixture of retirees, blue-collar types, families, college students, businesspeople from the nearby office buildings and every other kind of person imaginable. Breakfasts and pan-fried steak dinners are the Pantry's main domain. Roast beef, short ribs, roast pork and various other comfort food classics are also available for dinner, though the kitchen runs out of many entrees by the end of the evening. Everything comes with coleslaw, sourdough bread, a large bowl of potatoes and steamed-till-soggy green vegetables. At breakfast, there's a line out the door of people waiting to scarf down the omelets, egg dishes and breakfast potatoes. Preparations are as simple as can be, and prices can't be beat.

Carmine Opramolla-Retired

To Whom It May Concern:- I have been a patron of the Pantry for yrs! To me there's not another place like it! The food is great, & you get plenty of it. People come from all over, just to go to the Pantry. I'd be lost without it! Sincerely, Carmine Opramolla cofilms@aol.com

Simply Awful
By teezmepeas on 04/15/2007
I have been wanting to try this and finally made it. I could have spared myself the trouble. The food was simply awful, undercooked and bland. There was a line out the door and it was packed, while there is only one restroom which could use cleaning. I won't be back

Best diner-type chow in town
By kunstderfuge9 on 07/29/2006
For those who like down-to-earth, diner-type food, this is THE place. It should also be on the top-10 breakfast and best cheap eats lists. The best cole slaw ANYWHERE. Particular favorites of mine: beef cutlets, roast pork. Suggestions: 1. Potatoes: avoid the (instant) mash potatoes and get the pan-fried spuds. 2. Vegetables: every day one of three (canned) vegetables is served with lunch and dinner, rotating between green beans, corn and peas. However, ask for the steamed carrots which are available every day.
