Having refined the art of serving the side dish as a main course, Stephen Arroyo (of Cobras & Matadors, Cobra Lily and Hillmont fame) beckons Silverlake-sters to sit down, have a smoke (in the enclosed patio space) and share one of the many Mexican dishes ripe for dabbling. At Malo, you can distribute "shrimp diablo" or cheese-stuffed zucchini rellenos to strangers, siblings and close confidants while sitting on long, conversation-friendly benches. And if the motel art near the doorways and the stuffed goat heads on the wall don't immediately thwart your digestion, you can order up another batch of fried-to-order chips, which may cost a few bucks but are a nice contrast to more traditional places where less-enthralling chips are thrown your way in bulk. Located in the old Cobalt Cantina space, Malo is half bar, half restaurant, with an eccentric decor that makes you feel like someone raided a garage sale in Los Feliz and is using Malo as storage space. Even still, the guacamole is as tasteful, fresh and as fun to touch as the red velvet on the walls, while the a la carte menu offers enough pleasures to make plates like the shrimp dishes seem too pricey for what you get.

malo has brunch?? wow
By ealvillar73 on 05/16/2008
So i hadn't been to malo in quite a while after moving to the westside from eagle rock. I am so glad i went back. It was last saturday afternoon and walking by i noticed they were open. I don't remember malo ever being open during the day before but it turns out they do brunch now. It was really quite good. Mexican breakfasts inventively done. All the salsas and tacos from dinner were available. I didn't know what to get. The mexican french toast was really good. My girlfriend got egg sopes with a chipotle cream sauce. kind of like a benedict. also good. What a serendipitous find. well, that's my two cents. worth a trip.

What the!?!?!?!
By cougarsixsix on 04/15/2007
IS the right response after hitting this gem of a restaurant. It's the Oz (the emerald kind... not the prison shower type) of eateries and turns those frowns upside down. Let me start with how bad my day was that ended in pure joy at MALO. I had just been in the biggest fight with my boss AND then found out my lady friend was leaving me. Awesome, right? So, my friends decided to cheer me up with a night out. "We're taking you to MALO tonight." They said. "MALO what the hell is that?" I respond. "Trust us, you'll love it. Plus, what do you got to lose?" So there it begin. I was magically whisked away to a land of tequila, fun and beef and pickle taco's. The staff was soooooo amazing. i didn't have to wait for a single thing. I didn't even have to ASK for anything, they were so on top of thing's... to my amazement. So unlike many other restaurants in LA. It seemed like everybody in there knew each other and were having so much fun. I meet so many interesting people, staff included. Here's some key points on why you should visit: *Beef and pickle taco's. "WHAT THE!?!?! I know what you are thinking. These things are like crack. Deep Fried Taco's very simple. Ground Beef cheese and pickles! *The Carne Asada was KILLER! *THE Salsa.... AMAZING! I suggest you try the Burnt Habanero Salsa. It's soooooo good. It's starts off sweet and nice then the fire catches up in such mouth watering manner. *The 160(ish) different types of Tequila that will blow your mind. Those bartenders can really serve up those margarita's! (this is were the night got interesting) *The staff was amazing. They were very informative about the menu and the differences about the tequila's. *The price. So affordable. *The atmosphere. Dark and fun. This will be my place were I take my newly single self on dates! *The eye-candy. Holy God! Everybody in the place was amazing. I am soooo happy there is a place like Malo. Trust me you will have a blast!

The food, atmosphere, service... everything is excellent at Malo. I keep going back... I have no idea what the other reviewers experienced, but it is one of my favorite places in LA. Everything I have ever tasted on the menu is fantastic.
