Rate and Write a Review Having refined the art of serving the side dish as a main course, Stephen Arroyo (of Cobras & Matadors, Cobra Lily and Hillmont fame) beckons Silverlake-sters to sit down, have a smoke (in the enclosed patio space) and share one of the many Mexican dishes ripe for dabbling. At Malo, you can distribute "shrimp diablo" or cheese-stuffed zucchini rellenos to strangers, siblings and close confidants while sitting on long, conversation-friendly benches. And if the motel art near the doorways and the stuffed goat heads on the wall don't immediately thwart your digestion, you can order up another batch of fried-to-order chips, which may cost a few bucks but are a nice contrast to more traditional places where less-enthralling chips are thrown your way in bulk. Located in the old Cobalt Cantina space, Malo is half bar, half restaurant, with an eccentric decor that makes you feel like someone raided a garage sale in Los Feliz and is using Malo as storage space. Even still, the guacamole is as tasteful, fresh and as fun to touch as the red velvet on the walls, while the a la carte menu offers enough pleasures to make plates like the shrimp dishes seem too pricey for what you get.
