There may be branches of La Parilla in other parts of the city, but East LA is home of the original. While very non-descript on the outside, the interior has a warm, festive atmosphere of hanging pinatas and papel picado, and knick-knacks found in the house of any abuelita. Start with an order from the guacomole cart, fresh-made and served in a giant stone bowl. The rest of the menu prompts salivation with impressive meat and seafood sections. Try the Filete Yucateco for a tropically spiced steak. The tortillas are handmade on a slightly imposing grill in the middle of the dining area, but its presence just adds to the authenticity of the place. The portions are hearty; you'll be lucky if you have room for a sweet flan or arroz con leche afterward. A cool bonus: Traveling "musicos" visit tables to serenade you and your guests.

Not so impressed
By sweetprinze on 02/21/2006
I went to la parilla excited about trying theirf food. I had to try the very popular Guacamole but I was a bit dissappointed. It lacked a little flavor, better than average I must say but I've had better in many other restaurants. Service was good, The portion was terrible, I ordered Carne asada with shrimp, and I'm a shrimp person and all I got was 2 shrimp. The flavor was good, but not enough, If you eat a lot don't go there, unless you don't eat much. The place was very colorful I think a little too decorated. I give that place about 2 stars and a half, and I wouldn't go there again.
