"Entertainment people" as well as upscale foodies and wine buffs converge on Greenblatt's, a Sunset staple for the best in bottles and bites to put on your table. The staff has noted that Rhones are gaining in popularity with regulars, as are vintages from the South of France. Patrons keep putting Greenblatt's on their list, perhaps because of their deep discounts and creative sales on a rotating selection of wines. The store once ran an "Internet Special" on a Chateau Grand Caumont, so-called because the guy who sold it to Greenblatt's had been storing the vintage in a warehouse near Silicon Valley and the rent got just too darn high. Greenblatt's owner Jeff Kavin is a Bordeaux buff himself (as well as a fan of the Burgundies), explaining simply "those French guys make good wines." Getting famished reading all those labels? Go grab a #5 sandwich -- a gooey Greenblatt's concoction involving corn beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing, all on double-baked rye. This scrumptious little number is a store favorite. Or just ask for a matzo ball -- each one is the size of a softball.
