Since 1983, the Hollywood staple has offered diners a hip alternative to the storefront Chinese takeouts that litter the city. A dimly lit interior adorned with local artists' work welcomes patrons who don't mind paying an extra few bucks a plate for atmosphere. However, the true allure of Genghis Cohen lies not in the purported New York-style cuisine but in the caliente Szechuan zing of nearly all the dishes. While other local restaurants specialize in more mild Cantonese specialties, Genghis Cohen throws a little fire on the palate with such dishes as Szechuan green beans and chipotle chicken. Regulars know that the New York eggrolls come only in the meat-filled variety, while the vegetarian version is little more than a glorified burrito-sized spring roll that lacks the oft-copied, never duplicated outer layer of its East Coast brethren. Unlike many other restaurants of its ilk, Genghis Cohen offers a wide range of alcohol beverages and prides itself on fast, attentive service. Make an evening of your visit by taking in live music in the adjacent room. Visit their Web site for calendar information and sound bites of upcoming artists.

Not chinese food
By beamblossom on 05/18/2008
What the hell? This restaurant shouldn't be counted as 'chinese" food. Having this restaurant on the "best of" list is an embarrassment to real chinese food restaurants. Just go to Chinatown or east on the 10 freeway and exit on Atlantic or Garfield and pick any restaurant on the way, and it will be much more real and cheaper than Genghis Cohen. All you Hollywood and Westside people, get out of your area and discover Chinatown and Monterey Park for real chinese food.

Cold Food, Poor Customer Servi
By elephant60628 on 01/07/2008
My husband and I ate at Genghis Cohen tonight and it had to be the worst customer service ever. Our main course was served cold 45 minutes after our appetizers. My husband ordered beer and the waitress never returned to ask him for a second. Our plates sat in front of us 40 minutes after we had clearly finished eating. We complained to management cordially and they called us free loaders and said they were busy and that is why their service was horrible and their food was cold. They actually admitted to poor service and cold food. I could not believe it. We waited thirty minutes for them to come and take our check. We were never offered dessert. I must say that if you want Asian Cusine, go to PF Chang. I was so hungry by the time our food came out, which came out ten minutes apart; I actually ate the cold food. What a night. I wish I could take our four hours back and go elsewhere. The manager actually walked away from us with out offering any apology for such poor service.
