Thriving on continual positive word-of-mouth, this mom-and-pop restaurant treats patrons like family, catering to their likes and dislikes (no meat, no dairy, for instance). You want spicy, they make it atomic. Prefer it mild? They tone it down for you. There's nothing a la carte and no written menu, as all items are described daily by your server, like the house specialty, pollo ala crema, that's been touted as tasting "like the chicken was born in the sauce." The five-course meal includes a quesadilla appetizer topped with guacamole, albondigas soup, baked chicken enchilada or agustina (resembling a beef taquito). Main courses -- chosen from 14 items -- come with rice and beans, dessert (bananas in sweet sour cream) and an after-dinner cream sherry. Soft drinks, beer, wine, margaritas and sangria are available, and Wednesday through Sunday, a singing guitarist roves around and takes requests. The decor is dark and cozy, lit by wrought iron chandeliers with amber lights and whatever exterior light is able to spill through stained glass windows that depict sunrise, midday and evening sky-scapes. Unfortunately, despite the name, there are no actual gardens at the restaurant. But don't let that ruin the experience.

This is the Place to be at..
By CLOS1381 on 06/26/2008
I have been coming here for years this is the real Mexican food... there is no menus but the fat guy will tell you what kind of meat you want and the plates they offer... They start off with appetizers after one another by the time your food comes your kind of full... But trust me on this there is no comparison.. Once you try the enchiladas you will come back I have been to literly hundreds of mexicans restaurants and nothing compares to this. Try also there homemad Margarita it will have you tripping in the dark romantic place... Get your grub! grub! ON!

30 years never tasted better
By LUMIMAR on 06/21/2008
Year 1978. Opened for VAN HALEN at GAZZARIES ON THE STRIP (ATOM). The band was hungry, popped into The "GARDENS" and just had the best meal ever. I had the cilantro shrimp and chedder chicken dish, we had a pitcher of margeritas and after 5 courses for 7 (4 band members, myself and 2 GF's came to $11+ a head. When leaving, the Valet Guy had my car at the front door waiting with the engine running and the doors open dusting my seats with a towel.and we didnt ask for it yet, he just knew. 20 years later I was asked to drive some clients to dinner. The client asked if I knew of a good Mexican place. Of course I recommended The Gardens. Well the wait was longer than expected, so to my surprise out came apps' and margiz to the limo while we waited. I even had some band members from miami sound machine join me there and they were very pleased. Well worth the wait and take all your guest there, they will be as pleased as we all were

A Sad Little Garden!
By cataisle on 09/23/2007
The place is a small space with cramped booths for four. No menus. You have to listen to an impatience man who recites the few and limited menu choices. I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas. They came drowned in some gooey cheese. The salad which accompanied the entrée was chopped up into small pieces, and came with a dressing that tasted like a French dressing. The cost for each person is fixed at $21.95. You cannot just order a salad or a taco a la carte.

Great service, friendly staff, the food is simply delicious. I would have to say the closest to authentic mexican food you can get in L.A. Taxco also has the best (Guava margaritas)
