At a restaurant that's taken almost as much time to open as the fourth Indiana Jones film, chef/owner Ben Ford (formerly of The Farm and Chadwick) has taken his time crafting his next culinary adventure, perhaps something he learned from his dad, actor Harrison Ford. One thing is certain: They both know how to line a marquee, as evidenced by Ford's attention-getting menu of gourmet grub, starting with hand-chopped steak tartare with fried quail eggs, the crispy flattened chicken with roasted corn succotash and organic chopped sirloin burgers. In a minimalist, modern interior with cement floors, large wooden tables, exposed brick and some of the chicest metallic chairs you'll find on any outdoor patio, Ford's Filling Station has a svelte New York feel with the heart of a roadside stop and pulse of a flashing neon "Eat" sign. Of course, in true LA fashion, the wait staff has a casual demeanor dressed in all black; infusing the place with an all-too-familiar strain of modern. If you're just in the market for a drink and a quick snack, have a seat at the inside bar for a wide range of charcuterie and cheeses to go with a frothy selection of homegrown brews.

smoothing out the road

for a new place in a hip neighborhood with a guy whose reputation is swallowing him in a tsunami like a toddler on a kickboard, he has the stick-to-it-ness to make things work. amazing steak tartare, great nibbles. needs to stop partying and get serious. his name will only take him so far, and he is capable of carrying the rest without dad harrison's shoulders to rest on--he financed none this time, but is a frequent diner. that's a good sign.

Will give it another try

As Culver City residents, we were all excited about this restaurant's opening. We arrived fairly early on a Friday to avoid the expected rush. After an awkward greeting, we were told to sit at a table, but we were not given any menus. Despite a plathora of wait staff-in-training, we finally had to go to the bar to get menus. I'm not one for a huge menu, but a few more entree selections (I think there were 6 total) would have been nice. No pasta dish? Despite being touted as having exotic beers, we found out the restaurant won't be serving those for another few weeks. We were offered 3 boring selections, which then arrived warm. My partner ordered the flat iron steak and I ordered the trout. Athough the trout was delicious, the steak arrived very underdone and had to be sent back. We received apologizes along the way for the beer and the steak, but at $22-$24 per entree, it should have been better. Since they are still learning, we are willing to cut them some slack and try it again.
