From the Editors

If Paul Bunyon wanted to hit a restaurant that would satisfy his big appetite, El Tepeyac Cafe in Boyle Heights would be the place. The burritos are insanely huge. The Manuel Special, a burrito named after the owner, sprawls across the plate and is filled with rice, beans, guacamole, chile, pork and cheese. The popular Hollenbeck burrito, named after the local police station, is a daunting treat packed with luscious pork. El Tepeyac's fresh ingredients and classic sauces have been filling the bellies of East LA and beyond for generations. (It opened in 1955.)

For catering, El Tepeyac offers burritos sold by the foot. The nacho chips are twice the thickness of ordinary chips, and the chile verde, chile colorado, salsa ranchera and pork-filled Hollenbeck sauce are also offered as "banos" to bathe the tops of burritos and eggs. The menu lists a wide selection of Mexican staples, as well as breakfast items, sandwiches, hamburgers and even a T-bone steak. Patrons can either sit inside the small, no frills, loud and cramped dining room to be served, or order takeout from the outside counter and eat alfresco in the long courtyard. If you're going to eat inside, however, be prepared to wait in a line. -- Lydia Marcus (Photo: Lydia Marcus)
