Generally, chicken has to sing 'Las Mananitas' for highly-discerning diners in Silverlake to remember enchiladas. But El Chavo is one of the few unforgettable places that offers fine Mexican dining (lots of pork in chile verde and pollo en mole), within a quirky ambiance that eastside folks generally crave. There's the rascuache chic -- loud colors, santo candles and the occasional Virgen de Guadalupe decor -- positioned beneath dark lights, but it's not kitschy -- just Mexican. Perhaps it's the Dolly Parton mini-shrine at the bar, but El Chavo hooks you up with an inimitability that goes along with some of the stiffest margaritas this side of Sunset. Upon entering the restaurant, you'll notice a big sign that says "Cash only," but don't fear, there's an ATM inside primed to transfer funds directly in the name of your margarita trust. -- Raquel Gutierrez

Average Mexican Food!
By cataisle on 02/20/2006
Food is just average. The table and chairs are uncomfortable and close together in a rectangular room. I remember this place years ago as fun after I'd been out drinking. Don't do that anymore. So if that is what you are doing this place is OK.

Great food, great atmosphere, great waiters. Just avoid the busy weekend nights if you want a leisurely meal. They'll rudely hustle you out the door the second you finish your last bite. Whatever happened to a friendly "sorry, we really need the table, but if you'll step to the bar, we'll buy you a drink..."?
