Not satisfied with just one hip Venice eatery and nightspot, James Evans has created another one right across from his James Beach -- and Sharon Stone has already been in. Canal Club bursts with color -- it's the same space that housed Rebecca's -- not only in the interior but on the menu. Celebrated Venice artist Billy Al Bengston's painting and design enliven the place, as do painter and restaurant partner Daniel Samako's works.None other than chef Michael Roberts (of Trumps fame) heads up the kitchen, producing a fun, adventurous menu that's nearly impossible to summarize. In short, it's an international mix of highbrow "beach cuisine," which in translation, means lots of seafood and Mediterranean dishes. There are starters like finnochio (fennel) salad with Greek olives and feta, and skewers of duck liver, Chinese sausage and figs; entrees range from Hawaiian ahi poki to baby-back ribs with honey-tamarind glaze and red cabbage. There's also a sushi/oyster bar and caviar by the ounce. The serious wine list includes wondrous bottles that Samako has bought at auction, some of which are offered at unbelievable prices.

The P E O P L E

This place maybe by non Indonesian owner so it's OK. Places by ethnic Indonesians doesn't taste right, small potion, and not true to what is advertised like Bali Island in San Gabriel, an older lady there didn't want to give us free drink and we had to point out on their ad pasted right on the store front and a young lady there charged us a dollar for a teaspoon of chilli paste, maybe their price change with each customer or without notice, each time we go it's different. Most Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, Phillippino places are like that unless the owners are Chinese born in Indonesian but not ethnic Indonesian, than the portions are generous and they don't try to cheat you. The lighter skin, bigger onces with an easy smile are the Chinese, they move faster too. The slower moving ones, smaller, darker, no smiles ones are the Indonesians. The Phillippino and Indian have the better English among the Asian but still alway mess up your order. Strange.

My new favorite neighborhood restaurant! Service great and food yummy. I actually prefer the sushi menu over the Mexican menu. But it was all good. Highly recommend it for great ambiance!

The canal club has the freshest sushi around, and the very laid back attitude of the room, staff and menu make this place a true neighborhood hang out. You always run into someone you know. Sort of a twenty-thirtysomthing cheers...
