Rarely outdone in the realm of modernity is this shiny steakhouse from the Sushi Roku folks, hailing from the original on the Sunset Strip, formerly called Balboa. Even though the contemporary look caters to the young and hip, the menu is a classic composition for serious steak eaters, possessing a strong selection of cow that even your pipe-smoking, Brandy loving, turtleneck-in-July-wearing uncle can dig. Once you slide into the glossy interior with colorful floor-to-ceiling light fixtures and glass-encased wine cellar, you find cuts of dry-aged Kentucky bluegrass beef and even designer slabs such as Wagyu Kobe beef filet. At BOA, being decisive helps, as they ask you to customize whichever steak you choose from a choice of sauces and rubs, be it the house-made Worcestershire/peppercorn combo or even a more decadent creamed horseradish/blue-cheese crust rub. And if you take your cholesterol in bulk, you may enjoy chasing your turf entree with the onion brick that arrives as an aptly rectangular house of intertwining onion rings. There are a slew of seafood dishes (labeled "surf") plucked from the Pacific just a block west of your table, but seriously, why go there? If you're in the mood for a dessert with some novelty, consider the plate of cotton candy, which comes stick-free, piled high, resembling the remnants of a pillow fight gone awry. In the warmer weather months, the outdoor patio is refreshing because once your bill arrives, you might need a good Ocean Avenue sunset to keep you centered.

I went here last Wednesday and had the best time. The service was great and they were VERY accomodating to my veggie friend. The food was awesome and beautiful. The oysters were fresh and delicious. Our server recommended an excellent bottle of wine and it was so good that we drank two! Have fun!

People who don't think BOA is a great steak house...obviously don't eat out enough. I have been to every steak house in Los Angeles and the atmosphere and the food are 2nd to none.

Food doesn't justify the price

I have eaten at Boa 3 times now and I really don't know why. The first time the service was wonderful but the steak didn't even come close to my expectations. My wife's crab legs were pretty scant when it comes to how many were served. The steak tasted like the first steaks I cooked in my stove at home in the oven on broil when first learning how to cook! The second time everything was so-so. The third time I took my mom, wife, and little sister. Again, same results but this time with very poor service. I even tried the steak rubs after the first time and really the steak was not any better. We ate at bucca de beppo the next night and my mother told me that buca was ten times better than boa! lol. Within respect to vastly different menus from place to place. BOA is very nice inside, I'll award points for that. BOA also does this thing with sparklers at your table for birthdays and cotton candy desert. I'll give creativity points for that. That still only brings BOA to a D- in my book, just short of totally failing. I might be new to the "fine dinning" game but I have eaten at high end steak houses in Miami, Cleveland, and Columbus, OH that were ten times better than this place. The best steaks I have ever had were in Cleveland at XO Primesteaks. Followed by Cameron Mitchell's in Columbus. Oh, and I ate at the the Luxor Steak house in Vegas, forget that place as well. So how did steaks back east get to be soooooo much better than steaks from a high end steak house in the second largest city in the US? Who knows? Moral of the story: Save your money and go somewhere else if you want a great steak.
