Big Mama's Rib Shack has been cooking Southern specialties for more than 75 years. Best known for its barbecue selections, Big Mama's also serves Cajun and Creole specialties, as well as what used to be called soul food before we all got politically correct. Actually, at Big Mama's the chitlins, ham hocks, yams, oxtails, hot links and collard greens are still labeled soul food right on the menu and are a favorite of celebrity customers Chuck Berry and Shaquille O'Neal. The gumbo, a house specialty, is served in a Styrofoam cup. But all is forgiven after one bite of the barbecued ribs, beef, pork, ham or chicken, all slow-cooked over a hickory pit and brushed with a special secret sauce. -- David Hofstede

Not bad
By justineatso on 02/27/2006
The fried catfish and chicken were really greasy, cornbread was below average, but good mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. i loved their red velvet cake, very moist and dense, i took another piece home.. wished they used cream cheese frosting though, instead of the plain white icing. Its right up the street from roscoe's, so if im gonna be in the neighborhood ill probably opt for the latter.

Not as Good as Barn Burner
By mflet on 02/02/2006
The building is getting a bit long in teh tooth and so is the inside. When there for lunch, the place was almost deserted. Meanwhile, down on Fair Oaks near Glenarm is the BEST Texas Bar B Que this side of the Pecos! Pulled Pork, "Hot Links" which are really mild but great, Brisket, Chicken, Ribs, Tri-tip all in one of the best -BQ Sauces around. Great 'Tater salad and Lone Star (the National Beer of Texas) and little known outside of Tevas (but it should be)--Shiner Bock Beer . Peanut shells on the floor and whole on the table, iced tea in Mason Jars............YEEEHAW! U of T Burnt Orange stuff on the walls..this joint was jumping during Rose Bowl Time and ever since! You can order from your car via old drive in speakers too! This place should have 5 stars and be on the list!
