Popular with late-night crowds, this casual, counter-service diner masquerades as a hamburger joint, but offers a lot more than just burgers. The restaurant had its beginnings in the '70s as a no-frills burger and fries hangout, but has since expanded the menu to meet the varied and more health-conscious tastes of its Hollywood clientele. Hamburgers still get marquee billing at Astroburger, but the diverse supporting cast now features breakfast, international choices (Mexican, Greek) and a full vegetarian selection. Tostadas and Greek salads are popular lunch items, along with gyros and fish sandwiches. The vegetarian menu includes the ubiquitous garden burger, prepared a dozen different ways, as well as tasty veggie chicken and veggie beef fajitas that could pass for the real thing. Vegetarian moussaka (Greek shepherds pie) and dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) are prepared fresh daily, as well as orange, apple and carrot juices that are squeezed on the premises. But if you don't want the fancy schmancy, traditionalists are never disappointed by the original Astroburger -- a moist charbroiled construction of beef, shredded lettuce and tomato. -- Mikael Romano
