Ayhan Hassan is such an integral part of Port Washington that a major street intersection, Ayhan's Corner, has been dedicated in his name. No wonder, considering the Cyprus-born chef's contributions to the North Shore's culinary landscape, including this cafe right down the road from his main marketplace. Hassan focuses on health-conscious Mediterranean fare here, acquiring seafood daily from the Fulton Fish Market and grilling it over an open flame the way you'd witness at an outdoor cookout overlooking the Aegean. Blackened red fish, Mediterranean bouillabaisse and scallops turkolimano (baked with mushrooms, tomatoes and feta) are just a few of the eatery's seafood signature dishes, while the kebab corner encompasses skewered, olive-oil-basted chunks of lamb, chicken, swordfish, shrimp, sirloin and even veggies. You're not forced to just throw back ouzo here -- a full bar menu features frozen concoctions like mango sunrises or coffee coladas, as well as an ample wine list and Ayhan's specialty martinis. Check out Ayhan's Web site for his recently launched weight-loss program and free recipes.

the fish this place serves is disgraceful!! i have no idea how they stay in buisness ?!?! i guess after reading some of the other reviews i see that some people have no idea what fresh fish is!! well for those who have never had fresh fish let me tell you about fresh fish.... after growing up on Freeports nautical mile and fishing my whole life, when you cook a freshly caught fish flounder for example the flesh is light, delicate, and sweet. it flakes off when you touch the back of your fork to it! the flounder that ayhans serves had to have been frozen for months! it had the consistancy of play-dough and no flavor at all. the shrimp at this restaurant tasted like what one could only imagine how a tire would taste! oh and they decided to leave the silverware from their previous customers on the table for us to use.. GROSS!! you obviously cant get just off the boat fish wherever you go but this was by far the worst I've ever had.
